Visiting the port

Security and safety precautions prevent open public access to the port. However, there are a number of vantage points to view the port’s operations, do some ‘ship spotting’, check out the port’s heritage or take a boat tour. You can view a map of the port here, and click here for more information on the types of vessels that call at the port..

Heritage Trail

The Port Heritage Trail links heritage sites throughout the shared open spaces around the Port of Melbourne. Special markers have information and historical images, allowing visitors to explore the rich history of the port while walking or cycling along established shared-use paths.

Stretching 22 km around the port from Station Pier in Port Melbourne, through West Melbourne and Footscray, to Point Gellibrand in Williamstown, the Port Heritage Trail gives a unique perspective on Melbourne’s maritime history. Click here to download the brochure.

Boat tours and Open House program

Port of Melbourne operates boat tours three times a year for the public, including the Open House program. See our boat tour page for more information.

Public walking and cycling trails

The Port supports neighbouring communities – providing more than 10 hectares of walking, cycling and open space for all to enjoy. We also developed and maintain the Marine Cove Playground in Port Melbourne, the Webb Dock Trail and lookout point alongside Webb Dock, and the trails along the Yarra River near Newport Power Station.

We work with community groups to care for the port precinct and encourage everyone to enjoy the areas while respecting the local environment.
