Ship in Swanson dock

Swanson Dock
Taken from the Yarra River this shows the massive gantry cranes used to transfer containers to and from ships. They cost around $13 million each and weigh 1000 tonnes. The boom arms are raised when not in use and lowered when the ship is in position ready to be worked.

Containers stacked at the port

Giant building blocks
They look like Lego but each container is 20 feet (about 6 metres) long and can weigh over 20,000 kg.

Refrigerated containers

Refrigerated containers
Ever wondered how milk stays fresh or ice-cream stays frozen when it's in a container? A refrigerated container, or reefer, can act as a fridge or freezer.
