Environmental policy

Port of Melbourne Corporation (PoMC) manages just over 500 hectares of port land and more than 1000 square kilometres of port waters, including 45 nautical miles of commercial channels, stretching from the lower reaches of the Yarra River to the Port Phillip Bay entrance.

PoMC has adopted an environmental policy to guide its management of the land and waters of the Port of Melbourne.

PoMC Environmental Policy

PoMC is charged with providing the strategic management of the operation and development of the Port of Melbourne and to ensure this is done in an economically, socially and environmentally sustainable manner.

Our commitment

To achieve this, PoMC will:

  1. Comply with all environmental statutory requirements and other applicable environmental obligations.
  2. Establish and implement a Safety and Environmental Management Plan (SEMP) in accordance with the Port Services Act 1995 (Vic), Section 91D.
  3. Maintain an Environment Management System that is consistent with the international standard ISO14001 – Environment Management Systems (2004).
  4. Influence tenant and contractor Environmental Management Plans to also be consistent with the international standard ISO14001 – Environmental Management Systems (2004).
  5. Integrate appropriate environmental management systems into decision making across all functional areas of PoMC and the Port of Melbourne.
  6. Maintain policies which address key port environmental issues.
  7. Encourage a port-wide culture of responsible environmental management and continual environmental improvement.
  8. Adopt best-practice environmental management techniques where feasible.
  9. Minimise waste, greenhouse gas emissions, water and energy use to the extent practicable.
  10. Communicate the Environment Policy to PoMC employees, contractors and stakeholders.
  11. Commit to the provision of sufficient resources (human, physical and financial) to achieve the aims, objectives and targets of the PoMC Environmental Management System.
