March figures show strong container growth

Trade through the Port of Melbourne saw widespread growth in March 2018, with full and empty containers, motor vehicles and breakbulk all showing increases on the same period last year.

Total container (full + empty) trade was up 5.7 per cent on March 2017, with the port handling 240,532 containers for the month.

Overall container trade remains strong, with full container trade through Melbourne (import + export) for the 9 months of the financial year up 9.1 per cent compared to the same time last year.

Overall motor vehicle trade also continued recent positive trends in March, up 10.3 per cent on the same period last year, and showing an increase of 8.3 percent for the financial year to date.

Liquid bulk saw a decrease of 9.0 per cent in March, and is down by 1.0 per cent on a year to date basis. Similarly, dry bulk volumes dropped 16.8 per cent in March, but remain strong for the year to date, up by 14.4 per cent.
