Maintenance dredging commenced in Port Phillip in November to remove a build-up of sediment and maintain the declared depths of shipping channels, berths, approaches and associated swing basins for the safe operation of shipping.
The dredging works will be undertaken by the trailing suction hopper dredger, Gateway, which is operated by Boskalis Australia Pty Ltd. The Gateway is 143 metres long and will be clearly visible during its work in the Great Ship Channel and South Channel.
All maintenance dredging in the Port of Melbourne is undertaken in accordance with an approved Environmental Management Plan (EMP).
