Handling dangerous cargoes
Dangerous goods notifications
Notification of the intention to transport or handle dangerous cargoes, oils or bunker in the Port of Melbourne must be provided to Port of Melbourne Corporation (PoMC) 24 hours before the arrival of cargo in the port area.
Containerised dangerous goods notification - via DG Hub
PoMC has changed the method of notification of containerised dangerous goods with the introduction of DG Hub in early 2011. Exporters, packers, transport companies, freight forwarders and shipping lines can now create and distribute Multimodal Dangerous Goods Forms and vessel dangerous goods manifests online.
DG Hub is a streamlined, more efficient, consistent and faster method of reporting dangerous goods throughout the supply chain. It was developed in consultation with the shipping and exporting industry.

Guidelines and forms
Notification of intention to transport or handle any dangerous cargoes, oils or bunker in the Port of Melbourne must be provided to PoMC 24 hours before the arrival of cargo in the port area.
Class 1 dangerous goods notifications
To reflect changes to the Dangerous Goods (Explosive) Regulations 2010, PoMC has introduced the Class 1 dangerous goods – management plan and Form 5 - Declaration for pre-loading of Class 1 (Explosives) greater than 25 kg NEQ (Form 5).
The plan must be complied with to ensure all involved parties comply with the regulations' requirements.
Non-compliance will result in a vessel, her owner or appointed agent being fined, prosecuted or the vessel being refused entry into the port or, if the vessel is at berth, being removed from the berth.
The Form 5 is referred to in the plan as the document required for pre-planning and pre-notification of the intention to transfer and/or handle Class 1 dangerous goods and must be completed before loading of the Class 1 dangerous goods.
