Pilotage

Pilotage is available to shipping 24 hours a day, every day of the year.

The pilot boarding ground for Port Phillip Bay lies three to five miles south-west from the Point Lonsdale lighthouse.

The control centre at the Queenscliff Pilot Station is equipped with radar and VHF and is staffed at all times by Master Pilots.

Pilotage is compulsory for all vessels over 35 metres L.O.A. bound for, or leaving, berths in the Port of Melbourne and Westernport Bay, except coastal vessels whose Masters hold a current Exemption Certificate.

Pilots require 24 hours notice of arrival at the pilot boarding ground and a minimum of three hours notice for departures or removals for ships at Melbourne anchorages.

Pilots will board vessels 30 minutes before they leave the bay (passing Breakwater Pier), or 45 minutes before if the vessel is over 8.5 m draft.
