Tugs and boatmen must be ordered through Shipping Managment
Centre, and all charges are payable to the relevant towage
company. There are two commercial towage operators in the Port
of Melbourne - Adsteam Marine Pty Ltd
and Australian Maritime Services.
Svitzer Australasia
Svitzer Australasia operates from No. 30 Berth, South
Wharf. The base is adjacent to Swanson and Appleton Dock
berths. Tugs and lines-boats must be ordered through Harbour
Control, and all charges are payable to Svitzer
Australasia.
Svitzer Australasia operates a fleet of commercial tugs in
the Port of Melbourne. The fleet is made up of five modern
ocean-going salvage capable and harbour tugs. These include
omni-directional and twin-screw tugs, with bollard pulls
ranging from 42 to 63 tons.
The bulk of the fleet was built at Carrington Slipways in
Newcastle, except tug Gurrong which had its hull laid
in Australia and completed in New Zealand.
