Investing in a Stronger Freight Future for Victoria: Port of Melbourne and MEDLOG to Transform Former Melbourne Market Site

2 April 2026 – In a major milestone in the redevelopment of the Former Melbourne Market site, Port of Melbourne is proud to announce MEDLOG, one of the world’s largest logistics companies, as the precinct’s major tenant.

The transformation of the site – facilitated by the Allan Government’s decision to activate the land through a lease to Port of Melbourne through to 2066 – will be underpinned by approximately $500 million in private sector investment across the site and will unlock its full potential through efficient land use.

The announcement of MEDLOG as the major tenant was made alongside Minister for Ports and Freight Melissa Horne MP and Member for Footscray Katie Hall MP, with Port of Melbourne CEO Saul Cannon, MEDLOG CEO Ned Zver and Group Managing Director Mark Godfrey.

The establishment of port functions at this site is expected to improve traffic movement in the area, with future uses of the site including, but not limited to, rail freight and intermodal activities for import and export containers, freight logistics and storage, empty container storage, and a heavy vehicle facility.

Minister for Ports and Freight Melissa Horne said, “This is about keeping goods moving while taking pressure off local streets – cutting truck traffic, improving safety and strengthening Victoria’s supply chains.”

“By bringing freight closer to the port, we’re making the system more efficient and delivering real benefits for communities, the freight industry and businesses right across the state.”

Member for Footscray Katie Hall said, “This project will reduce truck movements on local roads and make a real difference for families in the inner west, with safer streets and better connections for our community.”

MEDLOG, the logistics arm of the MSC Group, brings global expertise in developing intermodal terminals, rail corridors, warehouses and empty container parks. The company’s decision to establish major operations at the site reflects both confidence in Victoria’s economic future and in Port of Melbourne’s central role in supporting national and international trade flows. Operating globally across more than 80 countries, it is one of the largest shipping-related logistics providers in the world.

Port of Melbourne CEO Saul Cannon said, “We are delighted to welcome MEDLOG as the major tenant for the Former Melbourne Market site. With approximately $500 million in private investment planned across the whole precinct and a significant uplift in jobs and economic activity, this redevelopment is a strategic investment in Victoria’s future that will help deliver a stronger and more resilient supply chain for the state.”

“By bringing global leaders like MEDLOG to Melbourne, we are strengthening our state’s supply chain competitiveness and creating the conditions for more efficient, sustainable growth across the entire freight network,” Mr Cannon added.

As part of the MSC group – with MSC being a global leader in container shipping and one of the largest shipping lines calling at Port of Melbourne – MEDLOG’s decision to grow its presence in Victoria reinforces the importance of a well-planned, future‑ready port precinct that can support local industry and meet growing freight demand.

Giuseppe Prudente, Chairman of MEDLOG SA said, “This investment reflects MEDLOG’s long‑term commitment to building resilient, port‑connected infrastructure that supports global trade and local economies. Our partnership with the Port of Melbourne is a natural extension of that strategy — aligning world‑class port capability with integrated inland logistics to move cargo more efficiently from ship to customer.”

Alongside MEDLOG’s development, Port of Melbourne is working closely with government, port users, industry stakeholders and potential tenants to consider additional uses that will support operational efficiency – ensuring the precinct is developed in a way that delivers long‑term value for Victoria’s freight network and surrounding communities.
